Tripoli Cathedral

Tripoli Cathedral (Italian: La Cattedrale di Tripoli) was a Roman Catholic cathedral in Tripoli, the capital of Libya, located on Algeria/Elgazayer Square - Maidan al Jazair /Maydan elgazayer in the city centre.

History

The cathedral was officially opened in 1928, and among those who contributed in the interior design and decoration of the cathedral was the Libyan artist Othman Nejem.

Tripoli Cathedral was the second Catholic church in the city, the first was Santa Maria degli Angeli, constructed by the Maltese community in 1870.[1]

Conversion into a Mosque

In 1970, the cathedral was converted into the Maidan al Jazair Square Mosque (in Arabic جامع ميدان الجزائر), after having been significantly rebuilt, and losing many of its original architectural features.
